After qualifying as a dentist at Manchester Dental Hospital, Dr Skeggs worked in general dental practice in Derby. He left to begin his specialist orthodontic training at the Dental School in Sheffield and at the Derby Royal Infirmary. He has a Masters degree in Clinical Dentistry from the University of Sheffield in 2005 and passed specialist orthodontic examinations at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2006.
